The canuts

1 Between 1831 and 1848, the canuts revolted to improve their living and working conditions. In following the evolution of weaving techniques, this museum traces the history and evolution of what has become a Lyonnaise symbol. The exhibition covers the evolution of weaving technique and, of course, the technique of making Jacquard, which allowed them to produce five times more per day. The shop offers a vast selection of squares, scarves, neckerchiefs, ties, 100% natural silk articles—all made in the pure canut tradition. Admission is EUR3.

Prefecture du Rhône

12_2 This regional administrative building was constructed by A. Louvier (1879-90) along the lines of the Hôtel de ville de Lyon and the Palais du Commerce. The building had to fulfil the administrative requirements of the Prefecture (regional administration centre) as well as look after its citizens. In some ways, it is a kind of institutional art ... and that is how the city of Lyons is represented on the central pediment, leaning against the Monts du Lyonnais. On the ground floor, four medal shaped panels depict the local economy and the three major rivers in the area (Rhône, Saône, Azergues). The inside layout is similar to the Palais du Commerce - the entrance gives on to an atrium whose impressive double spiralled staircase is worthy of some of the greatest theatres, such as that in Bordeaux or the Opera Garnier in Paris. The painted decor depicts agriculture and local industries - the Gloires du Lyonnais et du Beaujolais by E. Fournier (1904) in the main hall will remind us of the paintings in the Hôtel de ville de Lyon.

Club Alpin Français

11_2 The French Alpine Club (CAF for those who know it well) is a true institution in France for all mountain activities. A branch is to be found in all the main towns - it truly is a pioneer in its field. There's nowhere more reliable for organising trips, whether they be for walking, climbing, cross-country skiing, downhill skiing or rambling, canyoning, mountain biking, paragliding and mountaineering. In short, anything which has something to do with mountains.

The Sacre Couer

250pxsacre_couer The Sacre Couer or Sacred Heart is breathtaking. The over look of the city streets is also worth the climb it will take to actually get you to this Basilique. You are rewarded when you do though with not only a view of scenic Paris but also if you choose to look around- an encounter with Montmartre, where many Parisian artists line the streets daily trying to sell work the little village is filled with cafes and french architecture as well.
