Vieux Port

Experience the true essence of Marseille at the early morning fish market that takes place here daily or go for a walk around the port, looking at the yachts and fishing boats bobbing gently side by side. Relax on one of the numerous cafe pavement terraces facing the port and watch the world go by or climb its south bank, from the top of which Notre-Dame de la Garde basilica commands an all-encompassing view of the city.

Calanques Marseille-Cassis

Departing from the Vieux-Port, the Groupement des Armateurs Côtiers Marseillais offers guided tours of the bay and its series of rocky, fjord-like inlets called calanques. Cruisers take tourists on a non-stop four-hour tour from Marseilles to Cassis, past a dozen small islands including Morgiou . Get close to imposing, steep limestone cliffs that date as far back as the Cretaceous period when dinosaurs still rulled on earth. Groups can stop off in the quaint old fishing port of Cassis.

Abbaye Saint-Victor

Placed on the southern bank of the Vieux-Port above the dry dock, this abbey founded in the 5th century played an important role in Christianity's development in the Mediterranean between the 11th and 18th centuries. In the 14th century, Pope Urbain V oversaw its fortification.The abbey's crypt and catacombs, which contain a number of ancient sarcophagi, are open to visitors.

Place Antoin Poncet

Place A. Poncet is located between place Bellecour and the banks of the Rhône . It is a relatively recent addition to Lyon's urban squares as it was laid out in 1934 when the Hopital de la Charite was demolished to make way for the Post Office building (Hôtel des Postes). This square has plenty of greenery, benches and fountains that could make its neighbour, place Bellecour , envious. A must for relaxing ride in Lyon
