Halle Tony Garnier

2_2Builted between 1909 and 1914 as an outline for the larger city. Inaugurated for the 1914 Universal Exhibition as a project for an "industrial city". This days, it is used for concerts and exhibitions but not so long ago it was still Lyon's meat market. Also used temporarily as an arsenal during World War I. Tony Garnier was inspired by 19th century glass and steel architecture. Garnier was more of a theorist than an architect as his buildings included all the functions of a slaughterhouse.

Cathedrale Saint-Pierre

1_2Something funny about this place is that unknown even to many residents of Montpellier, the exterior of Saint Pierre Cathedral is marked by its twin towers rising above the surrounding buildings. The current entrance is by the unassuming doorway in Rue du Cardinal Cabrières.

Centre Communautaire Culturel Juif

Lesoferouscribejuif This centre organises and publicises activities in Montpellier which promote a better understanding and appreciation of Jewish culture, both past and present. These activities are open to public in general including the conferences, films, poetry readings and meetings with artists. The centre is also a source of information and advice and offers a variety of resources such as periodicals and videos. Hebrew lessons can also be organised through the centre.

Piscine Olympique d'Antigone

France4This aquatic park, is placed in the Antigone quarter. The centre covers 800m2 and there are a wide range of games and sports to play. The main attractions are two pools, one for serious swimming and the other for fun (games, whirlpool, slides), but you can also tan in the solarium, feed in the cafeteria or sweat in the gym.

Laserquest

France3This is might not be the most sophisticated of activities to do while you are in France but that does not mean it is not great fun. A 200-square-metre indoor battlefield allows young and old alike plenty of opportunity to stalk and ambush one another with harmless laser guns. Great place to spend a rainy afteroon in family . Admission is EUR6 before 7p, EUR7.5 after 7p.

Jardin des Plantes

Fra2Le Jardin des Plantes was created in 1593. Today, it's a piece of haven from the hustle and bustle of the surrounding metropolis. It houses a vast variety of indigenous and exotic species, as well as trees that date back to when the garden was founded. The paths intertwine on different levels, and the garden contains several small follies, canals, grottoes and many busts of bearded botanists. The admission it's free.

Place de la Comedie

Fra1Placed between the train station, the historic city centre and the Polygone shopping centre, this huge, pedestrianised square is the heart and soul of Montpellier. Deriving its name from the first theatre built in the 18th century on the site of what is now the Opera, this impressive square is the site of majestic open-air productions and street entertainment on a daily bases. At the centre of the square, beneath the beautiful facades of the surrounding 19th century buildings, is the fountain of the Three Graces. Guided tours are available for a reasonable price.

Armee du Salut

Swe35 This Protestant church is placed in the middle of the town on the famous La Canebière main road which leads to the Vieux-Port. On Saturdays, meetings are held at 8.30pm. On Sundays, the serviceS begin at 10am. On Tuesdays there is a prayer session from 6pm to 6.30pm. On Wednesdays there is a children's group at 2.30pm and a ligue du foyer(family association) meeting at 2.30pm on Fridays.

Escalier de la gare Saint-Charles

Simg1739saintcharles in 1908, Marseilles' town council launched a project for architects to design a monumental stairway outside the station, the contract being awarded to architects Serres and Arnal. The construction of the staircase which dominates the city with its 104 steps was undertaken between 1925 and 1927, and the inauguration took place a year later in 1928. A nice place to take that tipical picture as a souvenir to bring back home.

La Cadrerie

V06_120 Since 1971, artists of all styles have favoured La Cadrerie, a picture gallery near Place Castellane. It has a particular interest in promoting unknown but talented artists, helping them to achieve recognition, more than 800 painters, sculpters and photographers have exhibited here to date. Popular with visitors interested in know all the new trends and movements.
